19-A Examiner/Driver Trainer

Minimum Job Requirements: 

Graduation from High School or possession of a High School equivalency diploma AND

three (3)years’ experience as a school bus driver, possession of 19-A Examiner Certification. 

Job Description:

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

  • These duties involve the responsibility for training and/or retraining of new and experienced bus drivers and bus monitors.
  • The incumbent is also responsible for testing drivers, new and experienced, under the required Department of Motor Vehicle laws and regulations. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Maintain employee compliance; 19A, SED and DOT files and records related to accidents, road tests, defensive driving, and safety courses;
  • Conducts evaluations on new and experienced drivers;
  • Reviews defensive driving records, and conducts biennial written and road tests;
  • Trains and retrains transportation employees, new and experienced, and provides detailed information to the Transportation Director, including recommendations regarding hiring;
  • Facilitates and participates in safety refreshers and clinics to assist drivers who have been identified as needing help in correcting any deficiencies in their driving or other work-related activity; as well as monitors and operates school buses in the absence of employees or emergency situations;
  • Schedules fingerprints for bus drivers and bus monitors, if needed.
  • Facilitates annual bus safety drills per year.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of the operation of school buses;
  • Good knowledge of safe driving practices;
  • Good knowledge of the School Districts policies pertaining to transportation;
  • Good knowledge of the following as it pertains to pupil transportation/school buses: NY Vehicle & Traffic Law, NY Education Law and Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
  • Ability to organize and maintain records;
  • Ability to train, test and evaluate school bus drivers and monitors.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT (at time of application);

  • CDL Class B license with “P” and “S” endorsements;
  • NYDMV 19-A Certified Examiner Class B
  • Current SBDI preferred

Minimum Job Requirements: 

Graduation from High School or possession of a High School equivalency diploma AND three (3)years’ experience as a school bus driver, possession of 19-A Examiner Certification.
