Ability to safely manage complex medical needs in both school and transportation settings while supporting the student's participation in the educational environment. The Registered Nurse (RN) provides individualized nursing care to a medically fragile student throughout the school day, including transportation to and from school, to ensure safe access to educational programming. The RN implements physician orders, the student's Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP), Emergency Care Plan (ECP), and applicable IEP health services while promoting the student's health, safety, participation, and independence. Essential Responsibilities - Provide continuous assessment and monitoring of the student's medical status throughout the school day and during transportation on the school bus.
- Implement physician orders and nursing care plans.
- Administer prescribed medications and skilled nursing treatments in accordance with New York State law and district policy.
- Provide skilled airway and respiratory care, including tracheostomy care, suctioning, monitoring of respiratory equipment, and responding to changes in respiratory status.
- Monitor for seizure activity and implement the student's Seizure Action Plan, including administration of emergency medication as prescribed.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot prescribed medical equipment.
- Recognize changes in the student's condition and exercise independent nursing judgment to determine appropriate interventions, including activation of emergency medical services when necessary.
- Respond to medical emergencies and provide CPR and other emergency interventions as appropriate.
- Collaborate with transportation staff to ensure the student's medical needs are safely managed during transit.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatments, medications, and significant health events.
- Collaborate with the school nurse, family, healthcare providers, transportation personnel, and educational team to support the student's health and educational access.
- Participate in school activities and field trips, as assigned, to ensure continuity of nursing care.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable district policies and state and federal regulations.
